Andy Applegate graduated with a degree in music from Temple University in Philadelphia, PA in 1988. His cycling career began after becoming disenchanted with the music business. After finding that studying music and athletic training require similar motivation, dedication, and discipline, he quickly became one of the top mountain bike racers in the Mid-Atlantic region. Starting in 1994, using Colorado as a base, Andy followed the NORBA National Series as a semi-pro racer. After discovering the intricacies, strategies and tactics of road racing, Andy turned to this discipline full time in 1997. Along the way he has also become a nationally ranked, elite cyclocross racer.
Andy is the 2001 Masters National Road Race Champion in the 35+ age category. He has acquired three additional medals at Masters National Championships in the Individual Time Trial. He has been on the podium 5 times at 24-hour mountain bike races, three of which were to claim the gold. Aside from scores of podium finishes at mountain bike, road, and cyclocross events, Andy prides himself most on his race-savvy and ability to put personal aspirations aside for the benefit of his team.
Andy began coaching in 1997. Under his guidance, athletes he has coached have obtained four National Championships in road and cyclocross disciplines, and a total of eight National Championship podium finishes. Andy puts a great deal of effort into helping athletes achieve their personal goals, from the beginner to the elite cyclist, and is a certified USA Cycling coach.
Andy and his wife currently reside in Asheville, NC.
